Lenovo ThinkPad T490s Review

Lisa Gade reviews the 2019 edition of the Lenovo ThinkPad T490s that features a redesign and CPU refresh to Intel 8th gen Whiskey Lake. This is a very slim and light 14” Ultrabook that sits in between the ThinkPad T490 we reviewed earlier ( and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 7th gen in terms of weight and price. It has Intel quad core 15 watt Core i5 and Core i7 processor options, a matte full HD IPS display (low power 400 nit is available). Though it’s very thin and light, it doesn’t compromise on keyboard or ports, and it has a Microsoft Precision trackpad. Thunderbolt 3, a white backlit keyboard, MIL spec rating for ruggedness are all standard.

  1. I am in the market for a new laptop over the next few months. I recently bought a Lenovo X1 but the colors were washed out (had a resolution of 1920 x 1080 anti-glare). Additionally track pad was very small and made scrolling difficult along with thinner keyboard that made typing less comfortable.

I was looking at the specs for both they seem pretty equivalent if I go with 16GB ram and 500gb ssHD and i7 processor. It appears that main difference is that the t490s has less ports, is thinner, and weighs less. Otherwise performance is comparable. However can anyone comment if colors are washed out or to circumvent this, would I need to upgrade to the higher grade display 2560×1440? My only gripe is that it is glossy. Anyway to circumvent this or should I be looking at a different machine?

  2. Hi Lisa, love you videos!
I think there is another interesting comparison between the T490s and the p43s of Lenovo. It seems like they have the same specs, except T490s has a slightly bigger battery, but p43s has a better PGU. But the most surprising thing is that p43s is 300USD CHEAPER!

  3. Will there be a review for the T495 with AMD Ryzen 5?
Would be very interested in this one 🙈
I wonder, whether the saving of about 300€ compared to the i7 with 16gb ram and 512GB SSD will be worth the less powerful Ryzen 5 with 16gb 512ssd 🧐

  4. HORRIBLE. Who tf cares about thinness and lightness? T Series were known as robust upgradeable battery swappable machines. If you can't handle a few extra grams that's sad.

  5. DONT BUY LENOVO. I just bought a Think Pad extreme. They canceled the order for "security reasons" and when reordered price magically was increased $150 and they refuse to refund. Fine, but I will be sure to tell everybody about their business practices. Computer is ok, it pisses me off when I touch it but ………
